On-premise/Microsoft Cloud Hybrid setup


Objective

CCS IT Solutions Ltd were approached by Manchester’s Trans-Bridge Freight (TBF) to migrate an on-premise custom application to new server hardware. The project also required Microsoft Cloud Technology. The hybrid configuration enabled TFS the ability to control their custom application internally whilst continuing to benefit from the cloud technology. TFS had previously used on-premises servers, bespoke applications, Microsoft Exchange Online and Outlook.

The Process 

To handle the vast amount of data a high specification Dell server was purchased. One of our IT Technicians then installed Microsoft Hyper V (virtual technology) and configured the server builds operating systems.  Following the configuration, our IT Specialists used a local Active Directory to set up Azure AD Connect to sync with TFS’s Azure AD cloud service.

Our IT specialists then installed a vanilla server operating system.  The installation and migration of the database and web application were coordinated between TFS’s development team and CCS IT Solutions’ team.

As the project was client-facing, and in live production, uptime was a high priority. To ensure minimum downtime, the process of planning, configuring and testing the migrated data was planned over a couple of months before being meticulously executed.

Once all servers had been migrated the old server was set up to use Hyper V replication. This effectively creates frequent snapshots of the live production environment. In the event of hardware failure, the live server with the replicated version can be recalled.

As part of a hybrid solution, these methods are safe, secure and are in line with industry best practice. However, many businesses fail to use a combination of backups methods and expose themselves to a host of cyber-related issues. CCS IT Solutions Ltd always advise a separate back up procedure coupled in with replication as a fundamental for live production client-facing web servers.

Summarise

As Trans-Bridge Freight already used Microsoft Exchange Online and SharePoint, this case study provides a perfect example of how on-premises servers and hybrid cloud servers can be combined to create the most effective IT Solutions. The use of other SaaS products can still be integrated to work hand in hand with any custom bespoke applications provided it has the relevant redundancy and security, such as UPS’, Firewall security and SSL certificates in place.
